Beskrivelse

For my mythical monster I chose “La Llorona”; she is a ghost woman. La Llorona is often said to be an extraordinarily beautiful woman. She is told to be tall and slender with long black flowing hair. She is often depicted in a long billowy white gown with a veil to cover her face. No one really knows when and exactly where the myth of la Llorona originated, but it was definitely from Mexico’s general area, if not Mexico itself. Supposedly la Llorona saw her husband with another woman and out of an act of rage through her two children into the river. She immediately saw what she had down but her children were already heading downstream, destined to drown. Some say she drowned them so her husband couldn’t take them away from her while others say she did it blinded by rage. Right after that some say she drowned herself; others think that she walked along the river bank for days, wailing and weeping while looking for her children and finally meeting the same fate as them. Everyone can agree how she spends her after life. Her and her children can not go to heaven without each other. As a spirit she walks along the riverbank searching for her ghostly kids. It is said to children not to go out to the river after dark for la Llorona will snatch you, mistaking you for her own children and will drown you so you and her can ascend to heaven together. She’ll still be stuck wailing on earth and you will be dead. I don’t have an exact set of reasons as to why I chose this myth. I guess because I like tales of ghost and dark stories was a reason why this appealed to me. Sources: La Llorona-Weeping Woman Legends of America 2020
